Hurricane Joaquin Wakes up the Atlantic | Filmers @ Large: North East USA

Not to dismiss the standard of the Empire State’s waves, but it’s fair to say that New York is known for many things other than surfing. Which, if you’re from the five boroughs or neighboring New Jersey, and are switched on to what the swell’s doing, can be a blessing in disguise. Such is the case with Long Island’s finest, Balaram Stack, and fellow East Coast kings Sam Hammer and Mike Gleason.

When Hurricane Joaquin recently produced the goods during October 2015, the boys were all over it. “It always feels good to get waves at home,” says Stack, “and especially for that long of a period. It was firing!”
